The Creative Leader

featuring Tara Lawall

Chief Creative Officer at Rethink

Tara Lawall, Chief Creative Officer at Rethink, talks about nurturing creativity and being a supportive leader with our president, Steve Gilman.

Being a successful creative leader takes three things — strong communication, a willingness to collaborate, and the ability to challenge yourself. At least that’s the recipe that has won Tara and her team numerous awards and a spot in the permanent collection at the MoMA.

As creatives, we are constantly focused on storytelling and building connections. Being able to spread feelings of inspiration, joy, and love is invaluable, and it’s even better when you can do that with a supportive team. In this episode of Brand Story, Tara talks about the transition from being a senior creative to a creative director and how that supportive culture plays a role in the successful creative campaigns at Rethink. You’ll hear about the “crafts” that help lead new ideas, how to embrace different forms of creativity, and why being a teacher can be a huge benefit for new leaders.

Quickfire Q&A

How do you think being a writer helps you with the CCO role?

Tara: I think communication is probably the most important part of the CCO job. So I think coming up from being a writer is just learning how to say things succinctly, how to communicate with people, and how to be human as much as possible.

How has fear affected you in your career?

Tara: Fear is a daily practice. Dismantling fear is a constant and it’s something I’m working on all the time. Like, what is the outcome that I’m most worried about and how can I strengthen the muscle to not be afraid anymore?

What's a trait of yours that you used to think was a weakness that now you think is a strength?

Tara: I believe that our greatest strengths are also our biggest weaknesses. I’m relentless, but I also look at that now as resilience. I won’t give up and that can be exhausting for myself and sometimes for others.
