A Culture of Learning

featuring Joseph McBee

Senior Instructional Designer and e-Learning Specialist at Canon

Joseph McBee, Senior Instructional Designer and e-Learning Specialist at Canon, talks about the importance of continuous learning in organizations with our president, Steve Gilman.

When was the last time you took the time to learn something new? Whether you’re reading a book, watching a video, or taking a class, continuous learning is just meant to happen in your free time. It’s also a crucial aspect of organizational improvement. When organizations encourage employees to engage in ongoing learning and development opportunities, they can stay ahead of industry trends, adapt to changing conditions, and drive innovation.

In this episode of Brand Story, Joseph shares his experience as an instructional designer and how he creates educational opportunities for different audiences. We discuss the similarities between learning and development and marketing, ways to make learning easier, and how to create a culture of learning in the workplace.

Quickfire Q&A

How do you encourage people to either keep learning or develop a continuous learning habit?

Joseph: I always encourage people to start with something that you know and enjoy and go deep. And then you’ll find that you’ll begin to go wide. That deep interest will spark additional interest for you.

What do you see in the future of learning right now?

Joseph: I see a lot of change in culture. Learning and development for many years has been the first thing to go when a company needs to cut costs, and that is less and less true these days. Companies are seeing the value in a learning culture, especially with the new generations of workers that are coming in.

If you could give your younger self any advice, what would it be?

Joseph: Your life is not going to be what you expect, and that’s okay. I think so many of us should give that advice to our younger selves. Don’t be disappointed with where you are, you’re going to be okay.
